In the [[Internal Family Systems (IFS)]] [[The internal system of IFS|model]] there are [[Part_IFS|parts]] and there's [[Self_ifs|Self]], and there's a *kind* of part that can exist called a Self-*like* part. It's a part, that isn't Self, but has qualities or attributes that are *like* self. It's typically a [[Manager part]].
- Often it isn't aware that a Self exists. Or if it's aware of Self, it often doesn't trust it.
- Self-like parts often *think* that they are Self.
- They can be smart, and helpful, and trying really hard to do the right thing.
- A person can spend years chronically blended with a Self-like part and not knowing it.
- Self-like parts have unlimited capacity for understanding and listening; but they cannot do compassion. This can be a good way to test whether you're in Self or blended with a Self-like part: is compassion present?
- Self heals; Self-like parts do not heal.
